Writing radio scripts

A script for a radio ad includes every word you’ll hear in the ad, whether it’s dialogue or narration.  The script also includes a description of any music and other sounds you’ll hear.

          > Download a sample script here

Instructions:

  • Download a template you can use for your script.

  • Give your script a title.  The title won’t actually be used in the ad – it’s just a way to identify it.

  • Write your name on each page.  If you are working with one or more friends, include everyone’s name.

  • In the left column, write down the words we’ll hear, including narration (one or more people speaking directly to the audience) and/or dialogue (two or more people talking in a skit).

  • In the right column, describe any music we’ll hear, such as “soft piano” or “hip hop beat”.  If you have a particular song in mind, give the song title and artist.  Note in the script when the music will start and end.

  • Also in the right column, describe any sound effects and/or background sounds we might hear, like traffic noise or birds chirping.  Place the descriptions where we’ll hear the sounds in the script.

  • Practice reading your script aloud.  Can you fit it into 30 seconds?  If not, trim down your script.  Eliminate unnecessary words and simplify your language.  Rewrite your script until it flows easily.

  • Be sure to look at the Counter-Marketing section of this site for examples of effective tobacco prevention messages and tips on how to create a winning ad.

    Have fun and good luck!
